What’s covered in the course?
Below is a short pdf that outlines what you’ll be learning on the course and how each session is broken down
What should I bring on my first day?
You should bring water and some kind of small snack. You really don’t need much. PLEASE bring water. Please!
Some people also bring a towel to wipe off sweat, but please don’t feel self-conscious about being sweaty. Sweaty is a constant state when you’re training, and it’s something that everyone has to get used to!
What should I wear?
If you’re doing the Gi Accelerator, you need something to wear under your Gi trousers. Something tight-fitting like spandex shorts or leggings will work fine.
If you have a rash guard, you can wear that on top. If you don’t have a rash guard, you can wear a tight-fitting T-shirt/workout top without heat-pressed images. (Heat-pressed images have a tendency to come off and scuff the mats.)
You don’t have to wear anything under your Gi if you don’t want to. Women are free to wear sports bras, workout tops/tanks, tight-fitting T-shirts without heat press, or rash guards.
If you’re interested in purchasing the rash guards and spats (what most people wear under their Gi’s), talk to your instructor and they’ll help you find the right size.
What time should I be there?
Try to get to the Academy ten to fifteen minutes your class. This is particularly important one the first session so we can get you your uniform.
How long are classes?
The accelerator classes will be 75 minutes long. Don’t worry, your instructor will make sure you get plenty of breaks. Once you complete the course, our regular classes are also 75 minutes long. We’ve found this to be the optimal length for progression.
Will we be doing live training?
Yes. Jiu Jitsu is a live art, and it must be practiced live. Your first session will be a mix of drilling techniques, and developmental games. By the end of the training you’ll be doing live training where the instructor will guide you through the process.
Am I too old/young/fat/thin/small/inflexible/flexible/broken/etc.?
No. Jiu Jitsu is scalable and can be practiced by anyone and everyone.
I have a friend who wants to start?
Awesome. We have a referral programme that you’ll be able to take advantage of. Send us a message to team@escapologybjj.com and we’ll be able to help them get started.
What should I expect in these classes?
We use the SSL approach in all our classes. SSL stands for smiling, sweating, and learning. You will have to put in the work, but by the end of the accelerator, you’ll have a general understanding of the pathway of jiu jitsu.
In the attached PDF, I’ve included some more information about what we’re learning and how we’re structuring the classes if you’re interested; it’s not required reading, but some of you may find it interesting.
Where is the Academy?
We’re located in the St’Giles Hall, Pound Hill, Cambridge CB3 0AE. You can find our location HERE
There is street parking available outside the academy and Shire Hall / Castle Hill car parks are a 2 min walk away.
