Sweep

The Correct Way To Finish Sweeps

One of the most common things you’ll see in competition (particularly in the lower belts), is a BJJ player sweeping their opponent only to get immediately reversed or submitted.

However, this situation is easily avoidable providing you use the correct movement when completing your sweep. In this short video, Tom shares two ways to come up from a sweep and when you might want to use them.

The Mini Bump

I want to share with you one of the biggest advancements in my closed guard game in recent years. Bold statement… but this technique took my closed from manageable to downright miserable for my opponents.

Hopefully, that intro has piqued your curiosity and got you pumped to discover this secret. Without further ado, let me introduce you to the Mini Bump.

In recent years (probably due to Danaher), Kuzushi has become a well-known concept in BJJ. In case you haven’t heard of Kuzushi, it’s the idea of balance breaking prior to a technique and will make your attacks much more effective.

The Mini Bump is a form of Kuzushi. The great thing about the Mini Bump is it’s incredibly low risk and if your opponent isn’t expecting it, can lead to sweep or submission.

Rather than try to describe this incredible technique to you, go watch the video below.

Don’t Rush The Sweep

One of the biggest mistakes we see from our students (even advanced students) is “riding” the momentum of a sweep to come on top. This is something that seems minor, but can really change the outcome of your matches, and can do far more harm than good.

In a best-case scenario, if you ride the momentum of a sweep and your opponent counters, you’ll only get reversed. Worst-case scenarios you’ll end up in a submission or stuck in a bad position.

Luckily, this is an easy fix. Can you do a technical stand-up? Yes? Excellent! Then you can fix this problem and stand up out of a sweep properly. In this video, Tom talks about the importance of moving away from your opponent when sweeping, and how to keep your opponent from standing back up.

Being mindful of your top position — and coming up in a position that is primed for passing — will really help your game evolve in the long run.
