The Crucifix Masterclass Part 1

The Crucifix is one of the best submission positions in Jiu Jitsu. The power of the position comes from your ability to isolate both your opponents arms and limit their movement, while still having one arm free to attack.

Check out this short sequence from one of Tom’s training sessions to see the level of control it gives :

The Crucifix is a bit of a cheat code for BJJ. You see very few people practice escaping the crucifix. As a result, once you trap them in the Crucifix, they struggle to get out and leave themselves open to many submission opportunities. Worst case scenario and they do wriggle free, you can either transition to the back or reenter the crucifx.

On Friday 3rd October, Escapology BJJ head instructor, Tom Barlow will be teaching the first part of his Crucifix Masterclass series. The focus of the first seminar will be on Crucifix control and simple submission opportunities. The masterclass will be taught in the Gi, but most of the content works just as well No Gi.

The masterclass will take place at 6 PM at Escapology BJJ in Cambridge, U.K. and is open to anyone of any level. The is cost £20 for Escapology BJJ students and affiliates and £30 for people from other gyms.

On top of the live seminar you will also get a recording of the masterclass and we’ll be going for a fireside chat after.

How To Stay Safe When Training Submissions

There are two things that are more likely to cause injury than anything else in Jiu Jitsu and you’re actually in control of both them.

The first one is very simple it’s falling weight. Falling weight happens during takedowns, passing, pulling guard, or simply tripping over another group. Anytime that you’re falling on your partner or other people are falling you, you risk getting injured.

The second one is when you’re in a submissions, particularly when you don’t treat them with respect. That’s pretty obvious as submissions are designed to cause injury when applied at full force.

However, there is a simple way you can prevent most injuries during submissions. In this video, BJJ Black Belt, Tom Barlow how to train and apply submissions safely.
