Developing Intrinsic Motivation

Did you know there are two types of motivation, but only one has been shown to have long term benefits?

Motivation is often portrayed as the carrot and a stick, but in reality, carrots and sticks are the weakest long-term motivators because they are external to the individual, or extrinsic.

Extrinsic motivators are powerful in the moment, but their impact on the individual is short-lived: as soon as the motivator disappears, the motivation evaporates.

Our goal is to help our students of any age build intrinsic motivational systems. (That’s motivation that comes from inside of them).

It’s intrinsic motivation that has been shown to lead to achieve higher academic success, exhibit greater creativity, and demonstrate more persistence in challenging tasks.

We want them to enjoy the work and the effort; we want them to place value on their effort, competitiveness, and attitude.

To give you an example of how we do this in our BJJ classes, check out the video.

In the video, Escapology BJJ head coach, Tom Barlow discusses how we interact with our students to encourage intrinsic motivations and remove the hidden negative pressures of extrinsic motivation.

Building Effort Through BJJ

Research consistently shows that fostering a strong work ethic and perseverance in children leads to a multitude of benefits that extend far beyond the classroom. Typically, kids who develop a strong work ethic and understand the importance of effort have a higher levels of self-esteem and life satisfaction, and are more likely to achieve their goals.

This is why we spend a lot of time in our Kids BJJ classes helping the students understand what it means to give effort and creating an environment where effort is rewarded over skill or winning. Jiu Jitsu lends itself to this way of learning.

One of the cool things about Jiu Jitsu is that it allows you to give maximum effort pretty safely while in a situation where you might be going against someone bigger, stronger, older or better. The result of your training then comes down to effort rather than skill or size.

To give you an example of how we do this in a class environment, check out the video.

In the video, Escapology BJJ head coach, Tom Barlow discusses some drills we’ve been using to promote effort and encourage kids to try their best in training.

The Underhook De La Riva // Masterclass

There is no worse feeling in BJJ than that second before you know your guard is about to get passed, and knowing there’s nothing you can do about it.

You’re trapped, twisting, and hanging on for dear life then and bam—your guard’s passed like a hot knife through butter.

But imagine stopping those pesky guard passes dead in their tracks. Better yet, picture turning the tables using their attacks to take their back.

Sounds like a dream, huh? Well, it’s totally doable.

Enter the Underhook De La Riva guard.

Unlike the regular De La Riva, it almost completely shuts down your partner’s passing options. They’re left with a series of bad choices that lead to their backs getting taken or a submission.

It’s the secret sauce to defending like a champ and flipping to offence in the blink of an eye.

And you can learn it all at our next Masterclass on Saturday 29th June at 12:30PM…

During the Underhook De La Riva masterclass, Escapology BJJ head instructor Tom Barlow will be teaching the key controls, sweeps, and submissions, that will make your guard a web of destruction.

Best of all, you can “Pay What You Want” to attend the seminar. Want to invest £100? Awesome! Only have £1? No worries? It’s entirely up to you. Just change the amount before you complete your registration. All entry fees will go towards the creation of Escapology 2.0.

Sam, Jack, and Charles Are On Polaris

In case you missed it, I’ve got some big news from our competition team… In a little under two weeks, Jack, Sam, and Charles will compete on Polaris 28!

Sam Quinn from Escapology BJJ in Cambridge on Polaris 28
Jack Sear from Escapology BJJ in Cambridge on Polaris 28
Charles from Escapology BJJ in Cambridge on Polaris 28

Polaris is not just any competition. It’s the biggest professional grappling show in the Europe and only the cream of the crop of BJJ players get invited.

The show takes place in Doncaster on June 15th. The energy at these events is electric, but nothing beats having our team cheering on. It’s an incredible feeling to have the crowd behind you, and it can give you that extra push in a challenging match.

So, here’s the plan…

Check if you’re free on June 15th. Grab a ticket from Jack (he’s organising all the tickets). Let’s pack the venue and cheer for the guys!

They’ve been training hard to make us all proud. Let’s show them we’ve got their backs both in the gym and on the Polaris mats.

If you can’t make it live, the prelims are streamed on YouTube and main card is available on UFC Fight Pass
