6 Common 50/50 Mistakes & How To Fix Them

The 50/50 is not the mystery that it was a few years ago, but it’s still a position that many people struggle with, particularly against an opponent who is intent on using the 50/50 to stall.

A lack of familiarity with 50/50 can lead you to make a simple mistake that can cost you your ass. Thankfully most of the mistakes people make in 50/50 are easily fixed.

In the video, we address this mistake and a number of others that we see commonly in the 50/50:

Here are the six mistakes:

  • Trying to smash through the 50/50
  • Giving your opponent space to get underneath you
  • Floppy hooks
  • Loss of control of the leg
  • Loss of control of the knee line
  • And, finally, stalling from the 50/50 position.

The 50/50 has gotten a lot of flack for being a “stalling” position, but in reality, it’s the athlete that is responsible for stalling (or not) within any position. Using the 50/50 effectively requires an understanding of the common mistakes seen in the position, which is why we hope this video helps get you primed for the seminar!

If you want to learn more about the 50/50 guard and add it to your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu make sure you attend the Nifty 50/50 seminar taking place on Sunday 9th September at Rolling Dojo in Cambridge.

6 Common Leg Drag Mistakes & How To Fix Them

Once you learn how to control the leg drag, it is a very powerful passing position that you can use against almost any guard.

However, you have to get your body in the right place for the leg drag to be effective. If you get the positioning wrong, your opponent will easily be able to knock you off balance and defend the leg drag.

But don’t get down on the leg drag (because it rocks!), anyone can get the leg drag position right. To help you get started, Tom and Chelsea have put together a video covering 6 common leg drag mistakes and how to fix them.

The six mistakes that we’ve identified over the years are:

  1. Not smashing the hips enough (0:23)
  2. Knees in the wrong position (1:41)
  3. Not using the grip on the hips correctly (3:24)
  4. Losing control of the trapped leg (4:34)
  5. Putting the head in the wrong position (5:46)
  6. Gripping the collar on the wrong side (7:11)

Want to master the Leg Drag?

On Sunday 29th July 2018, Tom and Chelsea will be teaching a Leg Drag seminar at their academy in Cambridge. They will be covering everything you need to know to add the leg drag to your game including the controls, entries, and finishes.

On top of the 3-hour seminar, you will also get a recording of the session so you can review the material whenever you like. To secure your space at Leg Drag Seminar click the link below:
