Guard Passing

The Lazy Dog // Masterclass

There are some BJJ players out there that have incredibly frustrating guards to pass. No matter what you do they always seem to tie you up and stifle your pass attempts.

Back in my AOJ days I spent countless hours, trying battle these types of opponents, trying every type of pass I could think of to get around there legs. On many occasions, I would just end frustrated, tired, and getting swept.

But I didn’t start seeing passing success until I did less – a lot less.

I was training with a particularly tough guard player, and getting frustrated as usual. In a last ditch attempt to escape his guard hell, I attempted the crazy dog pass. However, it went wrong and I ended up in an very loose passing position.

As I sat there trying to figure out what to do next, I realised my opponent couldn’t doing anything offensive, his only option was to frame and try to recover.

In that moment, the Lazy Dog was born. It became my go to way to frustrate annoying guard players and slow things down and even submit them if they get sloppy.

On Sunday 6th April at 10 AM, Tom Barlow will be sharing my whole Lazy Dog passing game.

In this masterclass, you’ll learn everything you need to add the Lazy Dog to your game, including:

  • Use the Lazy Dog to control and shut down your opponents guard
  • The ultra simple setups anyone can do – it lazy after all.
  • How to counter the most common defences
  • Some brutal submissions that come straight off the pass.

And much more. Whether you’re a speed passer or love the pressure passing game, the Lazy Dog can be incredibly useful addition to your game. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn one of the most over-powered passing systems in BJJ.

Here’s the best part… you can “Pay What You Want” to attend the seminar. Want to invest £100? Awesome! Only have £1? No worries? It’s entirely up to you. Just change the amount before you complete your registration.

The Ladder Concept

Have you ever rolled with someone who seems to have a tractor-beam-like attachment to you? No matter what you do, you can’t keep their weight off you, and it feels like you’re slowly drowning in concrete.

Braulio basically does this to me every time we roll, and I can assure you it’s a terrible feeling. By feeling it so many times (and asking him), the concept behind how to become a human tractor beam is pretty simple and can be used by anyone.

I call it the Ladder concept and want to share it with you now.

A lot of people think about passing (or any technique) as a single technique, but it’s not. A better way to think about passing is that you have to win a series of small battles.

Each battle is a rung on the ladder that finally gets you to your goal.

If your opponent prevents you from climbing to the next rung of the ladder, you stay there until you break through their defences. And if they break from one of your attacks, you only want to fall one rung of the ladder rather than to the bottom.

To illustrate the ladder concept, I want to share a short clip from the Cradle Masterclass where I talked about this concept. Check out the video below to watch it now:

Hide Your Legs

How many times have you been happily passing away only to have someone jump on one of your legs and try to rip it? My guess is probably a lot.

Since around 2015 and the rise of people like Eddie Cummings and the rest of the DDS, leg locking has become a staple of the modern game.

In fact, the leg lock game became so powerful, a lot of people got scared of passing. I even heard some crazy folks talking about passing being DEAD!

Obviously, passing isn’t dead, but it is essential you understand how to hide your legs or it might be the death of you.

Hiding your legs is actually pretty simple. All you need to do is make sure you knee and ankle stay on opposite sides of your partners leg (or hook).

This is something I discussed during the Cradle Masterclass, and as it’s much easier to understand visually then in writing and check out the clip below now:

Discover How To Create Insanely Tight Cross Face

Have you ever rolled with someone, who had a cross face so tight you thought you might pass out just from the pressure.

It’s a painfully interesting experience. And after a few minutes of being crushed by their shoulder pressure, you’re pretty much fine with letting them do whatever it is they want.

It’s safe to say, having a powerful cross face is a useful tool.

Thankfully, anyone can create an insanely tight cross face, if you follow a few simple steps. In the video, below Tom Barlow discusses how sets up the cross face for maximum pressure.

The Round The World Drill

Love it or hate it, you will spend a large part of your time on the mats trying to pass the guard. So it’s worth investing some time getting good at passing.

However, like the mythical one-punch KO, it’s rarely the first pass that gets the job done.

You need to create combinations of passes and transition based on your opponent’s reactions. Each movement should take you one step closer to your goal, and you keep linking techniques until you’re in a position where your opponent can’t defend.

So, how do you learn to transition between passes?

One way is to train combinations of passes with your partner providing the correct counter-response. Drilling like this will help you start to understand what to do in specific situations and begin to improve your reaction time.

To help illustrate the concept, and give you something to practice, here is a flow drill I call the “Round The World Drill”. This sequence of passes is a great way to warm up, but will also improve your guard passing transition speed. Check out the drill below:

Here’s the sequence with each technique being performed on both sides:

– Leg Drag
– Duck Under
– Jump Over
– Windshield Wiper Over Top
– Knee On Belly Switch
– Top Spin
– Chair Sit

Don’t have access to a training partner? Try the solo version of the Round The World Drill.

Here’s a 15-minute solo drilling training plan to help you practice the sequence.

Minute 1: One are leg drag
Minute 2: Jump over
Minute 3: Windshield Wiper Over Top
Minute 4: Knee On Belly Switch
Minute 5: Top Spin
Minute 6: Arm Bars
Minute 7: Leg Drag -> Jump Over
Minute 8: Jump Over -> Windshield Wiper Over Top
Minute 8: Windshield Wiper Over Top -> Knee On Belly Switch
Minute 9: Knee On Belly Switch -> Top Spin
Minute 10: Leg Drag -> Jump Over -> Windshield Wiper Over Top
Minute 11: Knee On Belly Switch -> Top Spin -> Arm Bar
Minute 12-15: Leg Drag -> Jump Over -> Windshield Wiper Over Top -> Knee On Belly Switch -> Top Spin -> Arm Bar

These drills are just two of many included in Escapology Online. To learn more about how Escapology Online and get your free trial visit:
